Step 1

Write “virtue” on the board. Elicit or explain that it means a good or moral quality. Give an example such as patience.

Step 2

Put your students into pairs and tell them that you would like them to come up with as many virtues as they can in 5 minutes. Make it clear that they should come up with abstract nouns such as patience rather than adjectives. If they know the adjective but not the abstract noun you can supply it.

Step 3

Get feedback from the whole class and write up the virtues on the board and help them with pronunciation.

Step 4

Write the following question on the board:

“What 10 virtues do you think are essential to be a good person in the modern world?”

Put your students into small groups and give them 10 minutes to come to an agreement about which 10 virtues are essential in the modern age.

Step 5

Ask each group to explain which 10 virtues they have chosen and why.

Step 6

Tell your students they are going to watch a short video titled How to Become a Better Person which explains 10 virtues you need to be a good person in the modern age. As students watch their task is to note down the virtues.

Show the film.

Step 7

Get your students to compare the virtues mentioned in the film and their own. Ask them if they agree with the choice.

Step 8

Tell your students they are going to watch the film again, this time their task is to try to understand the narrator’s reasons for choosing each of the 10 virtues. Play the film again.

Step 9

Pause the video at 03:53 or show this screenshot.

Go through each virtue and ask your students to explain why it was chosen.

Step 10

Ask your students to choose the 5 virtues mentioned in the film which are most important to them. Put the students into pairs and ask them to explain their choices.

Step 11

Hold a plenary session based on the students’ most important virtues.

 Homework

Ask your students to write a composition titled How To Become a Better Person: My 10 Virtues Essential in the Modern World.

I hope you enjoy this ESL lesson.
